Two weeks before Christmas I was invited to fish Abbey Lakes alongside fellow Gardner Tackle employee Lewis Read and Gardner sponsored angler Calum Kletta. I was really looking forward to the trip and being an angler that tends to target most things apart from carp, the session would be somewhat of a novelty.
Congratulations Alan on the capture of a 4lb 0oz perch caught whilst on a live feature with Total Coarse Fishing magazine. The fish was caught using a king prawn soaked in Enterprise Tackle’s Worm and Shrimp flavour during a day session on Stream Valley lakes in Sussex. The weather at the start and middle of January has been exceptionally mild and when we look back to this time last year it couldn’t have been anymore different. This month has again seen me targeting different species and I started by trying to bag a few carp from a local water fishing short evening sessions after work. When the weather begins to chill the fish tend to gather in the middle of the pond.
What a month December has been and compared with last year the weather couldn’t have been anymore different. The mild weather and lack of frosts has meant the fish have stayed active and feeding. Luckily I have managed a bit of time on the bank this month, but not as much as I would have liked. I have tried to keep things varied like normal and in December I have spent most of my time chasing big chub and perch.
After catching a big perch last month I was a little lost on what to target next. I had planned to visit the venue most of the winter and with the long drive back and forth I was expecting a long haul. It was great to get this fish off the ‘hit list’ and there would be no more perch fishing this winter that was for sure! I had a week to ten days with no fishing as I tried to formulate a plan and over this time I visited a number of venues in search of some inspiration.
